Elegant Swiss drama Fraulein tells the interlocking stories of three women who emigrated to Zurich from the former Yugoslavia. The no-nonsense Ruza has spent 30 years running her own business with ruthless efficiency. Mila, her senior employee, wistfully hoards her wages in hopes of returning to her homeland. But carefree twentysomething Ana disrupts the pair's gloomy existence when she begins working for Ruza. Awash in gorgeous grays, blues, and greens, the intimate, character-driven film slowly drifts towards its conclusion — but it's the melancholic journey, not the destination, that makes the film so affecting. Local film critic Jan Lisa Huttner introduces the film.
