Note: The reception for Strings takes places on August 3 (3-5pm).
For her interactive sound installation at Hyde Park Art Center, Mónica Herrera transforms the gallery into a giant musical instrument and invites viewers to play it. Strings from various instruments run from floor to ceiling, carefully arranged and tuned in a range of intervals. Considered alongside David Byrne's repurposing of a New York City warehouse as a ghostly urban organ, Herrera's Strings hints at an art form on the rise — immersive, handcrafted sound sculptures that host impromptu public performances. Herrera encourages not only audience participation, but cooperation as well; alone, you might coax out a simple melody, but assistance from other visitors yields complex, multi-voiced harmonies.
