Film Stop Making Sense (1984)

Long before David Byrne ventured into lush world music, he was a gawky, riveting white boy in an oversized suit, all angles and bravado — a herky-jerky art-rock marionette. The fact that, 20 years later, Talking Heads songs like "Life During Wartime" and "Girlfriend Is Better" are still found in any self-respecting art kid's cassette player testifies to his band's lasting import. Jonathan Demme's hagiographic concert film captures the rapture of the group at its best; armed with three nights' worth of footage and a fanatical eye for detail, the director has constructed not just a prolonged music video, but a powerfully dramatic and ultimately sensible film.
