Film: Shorts Films of Peter Kubelka

In an age where you can purchase nearly every vague pop-culture memory you've ever formed, it's a little dispiriting to learn that Peter Kubelka's landmark avant-garde shorts aren't available on DVD. Oh well, nothing gets butts in seats like the illusion of scarcity. The six-short program includes Arnulf Rainer (1960), a deceptively simple black-and-white meditation that resembles a vision test; and Unsere Afrikareise (1966), a jolting reorganization of images and sounds. Kubelka's work effortlessly bridges the gap between postwar abstraction and experimental structuralism. All film-studies gobbledygook aside, this is some visceral, moving cinema.
