Most animal activists can cite the defining moment when they changed from a lover to an advocate. Jana Kohl's moment was when she visited a puppy mill to purchase a new companion and discovered the nightmarish and utterly inhumane conditions that are commonplace at such facilities. Kohl's heart-wrenching book A Rare Breed of Love chronicles her epiphany and the subsequent adoption of a three-legged puppy-mill survivor named Baby. Kohl not only sidesteps the treacle usually associated with "pet lit," but spotlights the horrors of commercial animal breeding and offers concrete ways to help end this legalized form of animal abuse.
