DJ and founder of the genre-leading Hyperdub label, Kode9 is the UK's most tireless ambassador of dubstep. The illegitimate spawn of jungle, two-step, and grime, the music could have easily fallen into the flavor-of-the-month ghetto that gobbled up some of those antecedents. But Kode9 (along with Burial, Hyperdub's enigmatic flagship artist) has kept the dubstep backlash at bay with an impressive string of wonky, highly syncopated singles — including "Backward," which turned up on the Children of Men (2006) soundtrack. Whether you're a devotee or one of the many curious listeners enticed by Burial's Untrue, Kode9's hazy, rewound sets reveal dubstep perfection.
