Art Several Landscapes and 3 Landscapes in the Modern Style

If you relish summer group exhibitions and air conditioning, head to the two landscape-themed shows at Western Exhibitions. Director Scott Speh works with several artists depicting a variety of images and styles of the outdoorsy variety. Claire Sherman is known for her lusciously large paintings of ravines, woods, and more ominous scenery, while Aaron van Dyke relays topographical images via a two-holed pinhole camera, turning them inside-out. Dan Attoe's paintings on panel are haunting tableaux including astronauts in space and strange family scenes in the woods. In Gallery 2, the three artists are subtly influenced by early American modernist painting. Michael Velliquette's cut-paper collages are bursting with images of beasts and goons and gods; one of these, Hypnotic Serpent of the Unconscious Lair (2008), gives viewers a new read on an old style.
