More Flavor: City Gem Carillon Concert

Although it's common in the low countries of Europe — the Netherlands and Belgium, particularly — the carillon is a relatively rare sight stateside. The heaviest of all musical instruments, it's a collection of dozens of cast-bronze bells, played by a carillionneur via a keyboard and foot pedals. It's usually housed in the belfry of a church or a public building –– or, in the case of the Chicago Botanic Garden's carillon, a freestanding tower. Pack a picnic dinner (and a bottle of wine) and relax on the lawn while the four-octave bells resound.

– Audrey Mast

Note: Each 45-minute-long, Monday-evening concert is preceded by a hands-on tour of the carillon.
