Just because a band is friends with Jack Johnson doesn't make it a jam-branded John Mayer in the making. While haunting indie-popsters Rogue Wave's most recent release does come via the aforementioned troubadour's personal label, the band's hard-won cred (they have two prior releases on Sub Pop) remains intact. Sure, their sound's a little slicker (a process that began with their last release), but psych-tinged, ghostly indie rock remains leader Zach Rogue's focus — that, and attaining the same level of high-voiced croonery as the Shins' James Mercer. And while the band's trajectory has pushed the basement ballads into the background, the newly christened rawkers are as invigorated as ever.
