With the death knell sounding for Polaroid film, there's been an upsurge of exhibitions centering on those much-loved instant photos. But rather than waxing nostalgic, the 11 artists showing at the Chicago Art Department use the format's looming demise as inspiration for works that explore themes of death and obsolescence. The artists shape their Polaroid projects to different ends — ranging from personal ruminations on loss to playful, quasi-sociological surveys — and several pair photographs with text. The best works here use Polaroid's unpolished, ephemeral air to compelling effect, harnessing the medium's distinctive formal qualities to build on the show's organizing principle.
