Film Barry Lyndon (1975)

If the late Stanley Kubrick has a spot in filmmaker heaven at this point, his underrated masterpiece Barry Lyndon helped secure it. Based on a novel by William Makepeace Thackeray, Barry Lyndon is a costume drama about the schemes of a social-climbing rogue in 18th-century Europe. Granted, this isn't a film you'd expect from the director who gave us fiendish efforts like The Shining and Clockwork Orange; but Lyndon's got an emotionally restrained tone and a leisurely story, that, with a little patience, makes for compelling viewing. Kubrick has a meticulous touch, and the opulent visuals turn the film into a world unto itself.
