Elegy is what happens when a female Spanish director (Isabel Coixet, My Life Without Me) adapts, of all things, a Philip Roth short story. Renowned professor David Kepesh (Ben Kingsley) has built his life upon the belief that sex should not be institutionalized by marriage or even romantic love. It's a handy conviction that enables him to work his way through young women guiltlessly — until he falls in love with MFA student Consuela (Penélope Cruz). Elegy's shot in fulsome, sepia tones, with taut editing that lends emotional rawness to its core struggle: the mess people make when they confuse self-entitlement for living uncompromisingly.
