Forgoing the grandeur or gravitas of most WWI movies, La France is an intimate, unconventional fable about being lost. After receiving an ominous letter from her husband, Camille (Sylvie Testud) disguises herself as a boy and goes in search of him, eventually joining a band of soldiers as they wander a bleak landscape in search of the front. The men occasionally break into song on makeshift instruments, playing variations on a plaintive 1960s pop tune. These anachronistic, genre-bending interludes are a mystery, but they embody the romantic fantasy at the heart of Camille's quest and become a part of the stark dreamscape.
