Performing Arts: Theatre Gore Vidal's Weekend

Gore Vidal's cutting political satire Weekend was written (and is set) during the fraught 1968 presidential campaign. Weekend follows a Republican senator as he prepares for a presidential bid, only to find that his carefully poll-tested plans fall apart with the return of his wayward son, who brings a shocking announcement. Vidal's depictions of politics and family life may be deeply cynical, fraught with opportunism, self-righteousness, and prejudice, but the play is laugh-out-loud funny at times, and carried by brisk, witty dialogue as the characters angle for the upper hand.
