Music may come first for Chicago-based Drag City — the record label has championed singular talents like Bonnie "Prince" Billy and Bill Callahan/Smog for years — but the company is keyed in to the world of images too. As the label's 20th birthday approaches, Gallery 400 presents artworks and album covers that touch on the crosscurrents between the visual arts and Drag City's musicians, some of whom are artists themselves. The label has elevated the art of well-designed record packaging and embraced the virtues of creative collaboration in this regard; like music alone, images are not everything, but they're a powerful part of the story.
