At first, it looks as if Heather Mekkelson has left Old Gold's basement gallery in a near-empty state. Gradually, it becomes clear that the artist has in fact carefully recreated a flood site. Debris on the floor is veiled in mud and a shoulder-high water line — filthy below and clean above — runs around the room across curtains and wall hangings. As in her earlier sculptures, Mekkelson explores the visual forms of disaster wreckage, but here shifts to an immersive scale, reaffirming the value of unconventional art spaces: her site-specific installation is subtle, unsettling, and just wouldn't play in a white cube.
