Gene Siskel Film Center says…

Released in 1932 and initially censored, Scarface is one of the earliest — and greatest — gangster talkies. Based on the Prohibition-era exploits of Al Capone, the film follows Tony Camonte (Paul Muni) as he bumps off his boss, steals his girlfriend, and climbs the ranks in Mob-run Chicago, leaving a trail of bodies in his wake. Perhaps predictably, things don't end well for the tragic hero. By today's standards, the film seems raw and sensational, but it helped create the mold for the gangster characters that have graced the silver screen ever since — notably Al Pacino's Miami druglord in Brian De Palma's 1983 remake.
