The dead return from the grave to munch on the living in George Romero's classic 1968 film. After a zombie attacks a pair of siblings visiting a rural cemetery, the sister hunkers down in a farmhouse with a ragtag band of villagers for a hapless fight against the undead hordes. Perhaps the most influential horror movie ever made, the low-budget production traffics in gory effects and broken taboos, while an ordinary location and naturalistic style amplify its visceral impact. Since the film's copyright lapsed, lesser-quality versions have been floating around the Internet, but seeing a 35mm print in a dark theater is a rare, more terrifying treat.
