Ornette Coleman is a legend like few others. His raw, keening saxophone style heralded the birth of free jazz — and broke every musical rule in the process. By overthrowing conventional notions of harmony in favor of a highly emotive dissonance, Coleman set the stage for the following half-century of experimental music. Of course, Coleman still takes to that stage himself from time to time, as if to remind the legions he inspired exactly how it's done. Head over to Butler Field this afternoon to catch the Quartet in its only Stateside date of the summer.
