In 1976, British oenophile Steven Spurrier (Alan Rickman) hosted a much-ballyhooed blind tasting between France's finest wine and California's — including one made by small-vineyard owner Jim Barrett (Bill Pullman, grim where he used to be glib) and his long-legged galoot of a son, Bo. Suffused in golden light, Levis-clad blonds, and the rolling green hills of California, Bottle Shock bears the same aesthetic glow as a mid-'70s album sleeve. Thankfully, that's where the comparison ends, though it is a pleasure to ogle a film so easy on the eyes. Really, Bottle Shock recreates one of the last times you could legitimately root for the US as an uncomplicated underdog.
