When David Fincher released Fight Club, his adaptation of Chuck Palahniuk's cult novel, it caused a media frenzy. Everyone had a buzzword-filled opinion about the film's extreme violence, anti-consumerist rhetoric, and bleak vision of contemporary male alienation. But many critics failed to recognize the underlying hope that seeps through this darkly poetic tale. The film's "hero" is lost, lonely, and nearly suicidal, as he desperately searches for life's deeper meaning, but, in the end, overcomes the destructive forces that nearly kill him and finds salvation in a lady. By any standard, this cynical tale provides a harrowing journey with a distinctly happy ending. Welcome to the 21st century.
