The whispers echoing through contemporary-art galleries and museums in recent months have all been saying one thing: craft is back. Curator, filmmaker, and author Faythe Levine has been investigating the reasons behind the proliferation of needlework, crocheting, knitting, weaving, and other do-it-yourself design practices, and tonight screens a 20-minute segment from her work-in-progress, Handmade Nation: The Rise of DIY Art, Craft, and Design. The excerpt is followed by a discussion about how DIY tendencies relate to feminism, aesthetics, labor, the art market, and the relationship between so-called "high art" and craft.
