With its whimsical plot, highly stylized visuals, and star turn from Paul Reubens, Tim Burton's directorial debut is a hypnotic fever dream for the ages. Filmed in a style that could best be described as Silly Putty fantasy, the ultimate fish-out-of-water story finds the outlandish Pee-wee desperately seeking the return of his beloved bicycle. Skipping between magic shops and scary motorcycle bars, the suited idiot savant cavorts with long-dead truckers, escaped convicts, and fortune-tellers, while Danny Elfman's awesome score sets a manic tone. The iconic children's-film-on-acid is at its best when its elements of make-believe — pool-sized tubs, shiny futuristic gadgetry, and movie-within-a-movie meta-references — collide with the boring truths of reality.
