Mamma Mia! and Movin' Out conquered Broadway even though their books are, respectively, a silly romantic melodrama and a confused narrative told through dance. Their success is easily understandable, however: everyone wants to hear the hits. All the more reason, then, to check out Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story. It delivers not only a spate of toe-tappers from the Lubbock, Texas, rock 'n roll pioneer, but also the engaging tale of his quick rise from obscurity to the top of the charts before his tragic death at age 22. The fresh-faced, Fender-bending Justin Berkobien shines in the title role.
