Gene Siskel Film Center says…

When you watch a Robert Breer film, you don't want to blink. Every second is a rapid-fire barrage of images, each frame a mere blip of animation that disappears as soon as it registers. They're filmically reductive, playing with the fundamental nuts and bolts of cinema and vision while offering up a cornucopia of distinct moments. In masterworks like Fist Fight and Blazes, you can see the influence of Paul Klee's cubist expressionism and Duchamp's dadaist clowning. But Breer's playful abstraction stands alone. The gauntlet-tossing REcreation (1956) isn't on the bill, but almost everything else is — it's a near-perfect summation of America's most ebullient avant-garde director.
