Note:
Director Michael Caplan attends tonight's screening and takes part in an audience discussion.
Before it evolved (or, rather, devolved) into David Blaine's "endurance art" stunts and Criss Angel's gimmicky Las Vegas illusions, magic melded entertainment with sophisticated elements of philosophy, shamanism, and psychology. Documentary A Magical Vision focuses on a local magician who resists this trivialization and modern-day magicians' metamorphosis "from shaman to showman." The film — which premieres tonights — follows Eugene Burger's professional development, the influence of mysticism on his work, and his preference for meaningful, esoteric, healing magic. You won't learn everything about Burger and his ilk, but you find out everything you need to know — and besides, a magician never reveals (all) his secrets.
