If you weren't around for the halcyon days of Chicago post-rock, Dianogah might seem like a footnote in some long-passed history. Fact is, very few of those nebulously aligned bands could have hoped to match the dexterous rhythmic interplay between drummer Kip McCabe and bassists Jay Ryan and Jason Harvey. But, in a scene that placed perhaps too much premium on musicianship, Dianogah rarely let the noodle dominate their tangled melodic sense (fan fave "What Is Your Landmass" was the best Slint song they never wrote). Dianogah's first album in six years, qhnnnl, is their best; adding vocals (gasp!) and swiping a bit of Sonic Youth's tuff-gnarl discord.
