This mockumentary follows a ragtag dodgeball team called the Chicago Superdawgs as it rises to pseudo-glory in the National Amateur Dodgeball Tournament. The path to victory isn't only strewn with bad ball-throwing technique, however; there's also personal strife and adolescent anguish to surmount. Johnny Dodgeball was filmed entirely with local nonprofessional actors, and it ably balances the nuances of a coming-of-age film with the suspense and last-minute heroics of an archetypal sports movie. Adding to the local flavor is the soundtrack, which features hometown artists Spies Who Surf, Tommy Klein, and Doug Corcoran.
