Novelist Haruki Murakami may be our preeminent purveyor of dreamlike narratives, fraught with surrealist tremors, pop-culture curios, and the echoes of history. His recent "metaphysical mind-bender," Kafka on the Shore, jumps between a laconic teenager fleeing an Oedipal prophecy and an old man who can speak with cats, embroiled in a bewildering quest. Adapting the novel for the stage, Steppenwolf's Frank Galati distills Murakami's labyrinthine story into an agile sequence of riveting episodes — although it's still up to the audience to make sense of it all. Dreams shape reality, the unconscious comes to life, and Colonel Sanders, the chicken king, shows up as a pimp.
