A canonized master of photography, Henri Cartier-Bresson's legacy includes a staggering number of great images, as well as his influential idea of capturing "the decisive moment" on film. He began his career as a painter, though, and the role painting and drawing played throughout his life is often overlooked — he even claimed that photography was a means of drawing for him. This exhibition takes up the case by investigating Cartier-Bresson's milieu during his early years in Paris — an artistic hotbed at the time. Presenting his images alongside works by Salvador Dalí, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, and other contemporaries, the show highlights the parallels and echoes among pieces that are rarely considered together.
