Arranging bodies and movement on a stage presents unlimited opportunities for tackling large ideas, meaning choreographers must be skilled at handling abstraction. David Dorfman is well equipped with this unique ability, but always keeps one bare foot planted in reality. In these two programs, he uses history to frame the present: Disavowal, a premiere, uses John Brown as a case study on the inherent violence involved in eradicating outmoded, if still prevalent, beliefs. On Friday and Saturday, the company dances an older work, underground, also focused on the implications of following radicalism to its conclusion. Dorfman's raw inquisitiveness feels especially suited to these politically charged times.
