Labyrinthine hedges of gleaming, die-cast metal fill the ground floor of the Graham Foundation's Prairie-style mansion, like viral arabesques from a distant, alloyed future. Designed by Cecil Balmond, this site-responsive installation is actually constructed from thousands of crescent-shaped pieces that are miraculously held together in towering formations by delicate chains. In an upstairs gallery, multimedia light-boxes outline Balmond's theoretical foundations, but he's no mere number-cruncher; his innovative practice is attuned to the language of form as well as to structural logic. Another reminder awaits in the final room, where a fractal-based structure made of dark wood and mirrors commands the space like a massive, angular geode.
