House of Blues says…

The Roots occupy a unique space in hip-hop. They sell loads of records, but they've also self-consciously set themselves apart from the thuggish themes of mainstream rap music. The Philly natives rep PETA more than Gucci and gank album titles from books by Malcolm Gladwell, but they're still the premier hip-hop band: they supported Jay-Z for his MTV Unplugged sessions, launched Scott Storch's career, and gave us the glory that was 2002's "Seed 2.0." (It's all almost enough to make us forget "Birthday Girl," this year’s ill-conceived Fall Out Boy collaboration.) Tonight they join Common and similar artists such as will.i.am and Talib Kweli for a benefit in support of the Common Ground Foundation.
