Jazz was born in New Orleans, but it grew up in Chicago — and our city's resident talent can still headline a world-class lineup. The first Hyde Park Jazz Festival was an avowed success, with overflowing, enthusiastic crowds. For year two, the festival has doubled the lineup to 29 acts, and provides free shuttles between 12 venues. The 14 hours of music feature Grammy-nominated trumpeter Ron Haynes, innovative flutist Nicole Mitchell, and two generations of master pianists, from the ever-steady Willie Pickens to ragtime ace Reginald Robinson — the latter a winner of a prestigious MacArthur "genius grant."
