Francis Alÿs is a renowned nomad who follows a global circuit of art biennials and museum commissions, but in his work he often returns to consider the sociopolitical realities of Latin America. (He's been based in Mexico City since 1986.) At the Renaissance Society, Alÿs has constructed a two-story edifice within the vaulted space. Inside, he presents two videos, the animated Bolero (Shoe Shine Blues) — accompanied by more than 500 drawings — and Politics of Rehearsal, which combines footage of a striptease and a presidential speech with narration by critic Cuauhtémoc Medina. Repetitive actions and the idea of rehearsing become metaphors for the deferred promise of modernity in Mexico.
