Just as Joanna Newsom hearts the harp, chanteur Andrew Bird vanquishes the violin. Not only does Bird (signed to Ani DiFranco's Righteous Babe Records) strum the old-school instrument proficiently, he also samples it, overdubs it live, and uses it as an accoutrement to glockenspiel, mandolin, and whistle. Opening for fellow over-reachers the Decemberists at LA's notorious Hollywood Bowl earlier this summer, Bird delivered his multitasking melodies with his trademark charisma; expect more of that tonight and tunes from his last folk long-player, Armchair Apocrypha.
