Oakland tunesmith Jamie Stewart is as important to his young, earnest fans as Ian Curtis and Morrissey were to the post-punk adolescents of their day. (At a DJ appearance in Oakland last November, Stewart gleefully limited his selections to Joy Division and the Smiths.) With Xiu Xiu now fleshed out into a limber quartet, his songs strike an impressive balance between quivering, terrifyingly emotive vocals and warm electronica, shards of noise and plaintive melodies. Carla Bozulich opens with a set of experimental melodies blending country and city.
