Alec Soth: Dog Days, Bogotá

In 2002, after finishing his breakthrough series Sleeping by the Mississippi, photographer Alec Soth traveled to Bogotá, Columbia, to adopt a baby girl. During his two-month wait time, he photographed his daughter's birthplace. Dog Days, Bogotá, now on view at Stephen Daiter, is a quietly affecting collection of images that describe the city's beauty while hinting at its poverty and endemic violence. It's also Soth's most personal project yet. Haunted by small stray dogs, empty rooms, and hazy skies, the photographs recall the artist's uncertain circumstances and the idea of adoption with a gentle poetic force.
