Shining, euphoric, and playful, the Juan Maclean's 2005 debut album, Less than Human, is one part Buddha-like spiritual bliss, the other part Euro-inspired disco with a bit of good, old Chicago house. Dance-punk flourishes reveal the album's DFA origins, although it's devoid of any James Murphy-type cynicism. Instead, the album is startlingly positive, with enough unresolved tension in the icy, Kraftwerk-esque synths to keep listeners on their toes. Formerly of Six Finger Satellite, Maclean went from drug addict to poetry teacher, finding a new musical voice at the end of the tunnel.
