Gene Siskel Film Center says…

It's hard to keep a feature film running on camp alone, so credit Viva's writer, director, and star, Anna Biller, for getting every shag carpet right in her homage to '70s softcore. As a bored housewife, Barbi, the film's heroine, missed out on the '60s, but she transforms into the titular wildcat when her husband runs off. She dabbles in Hollywood orgies, hippie nudist colonies, and a prostitution ring; in portraying Barbi's extreme lifestyle, Biller attempts the tricky task of both celebrating and redressing the era's lax norms. Fans of kitsch ranging from Beyond the Valley of the Dolls to Austin Powers may be surprised at the difference a woman's touch can make.
