Starting tonight, chronic collaborator and darling to Chicago jazzbos Ken Vandermark reignites his Vandermark 5 for a three-week Tuesday night residency at Elastic. The celebrated avant-jazz workaholic has recently done time in the all-star Peter Brotzmann Tentet while working with Tortoise's Jeff Parker in the excellent dub-funk-inspired fusion outfit Powerhouse Sound. But the quintet (with Fred Lonberg-Holm's rumbling cello and Kent Kessler's manic bass as anchor) still delivers his best work. It's hard to believe it's been nearly ten years since purists cried foul over his MacArthur grant. But his unhinged reeds and compositional chops keep bearing out that early cred.
