Set on a rugged New England farm in 1850, Eugene O'Neill's Desire Under the Elms stacks up human passions like firewood — greed, hatred, pride, lust — and sets them ablaze with the spark of family discord. It's one of the celebrated playwright's more emotionally vigorous works to begin with, and director Robert Falls' revival of the play boldly fans the flames into an expressionistic roar. All three leads bring a stirring intensity to their roles, but it's longtime Falls collaborator Brian Dennehy who provides the smoldering core. As Ephraim Cabot, a hardened bootstrap patriarch, he seems born of the boulders that tower over him in the imposingly monumental (and thoroughly spectacular) set.
