The global economic downturn has inspired countless ruminations in the media, as millions of workers find themselves jobless and financially struggling in a very tight economy. But Italian director Silvio Soldini's poignant Days and Clouds offers perhaps the best take on the blistering effects of financial instability on our relationships, as well as the uncanny role jobs play in our self-identity. The film follows the travails of Michele, a middle-aged, once-successful businessman who secretly lost his job months before admitting it to his art-student wife, Elsa. The couple begrudgingly takes on menial jobs to pay the bills, but their marriage crumbles as they struggle to adjust to the loss of their comfortable bourgeois lifestyle.
