The Sting (1973)

You'll have to search far and wide for a more satisfying confluence of stars, script, and director than The Sting (1973), and even then you're liable to come up empty. Reteaming after their smash hit Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Robert Redford and Paul Newman play Depression-era con men who audaciously target a wealthy crime boss (Robert Shaw at his menacing best). The film's seven Oscars included awards for David S. Ward's witty, twist-filled screenplay, George Roy Hill's surehanded direction, and an elegaic Scott Joplin ragtime soundtrack adapted by Marvin Hamlisch — not to mention a well-deserved Best Picture trophy.
