One of the most heart-wrenching documentaries to appear in decades, Dear Zachary began as a memorial to director Ken Kuenne's friend Andrew Bagby. Bagby was murdered by his ex-girlfriend, who quickly fled to Canada with their unborn son (the Zachary of the title). Due to the horrific events that followed, Dear Zachary became much more than that: a bitter indictment of legal bureaucracy, an empathetic consolation for Bagby's family, and (most devastatingly) a memorial for a second tragic loss. For an inexperienced filmmaker, Kuenne's compositional skills are surprisingly deft. But even if that weren't true, the sheer emotional power of his story would still leave you haunted.
