In large mixed-media paintings, Von Kommanivanh skewers the lurking evils and cultural convulsions of the 21st century like a hopped-up shish-kabob party. Anti-corporate and nuke-related slogans proliferate amid a sprawl of strange and satirical figures (sexed-up demons, hapless innocents, Uncle Sam); in one canvas, a corpulent cowboy in patriotic duds perches on a mega-sized Rx container. Kommanivanh lays it on thick sometimes — as with his painting of Bush as a cross-eyed Nazi surrounded by skulls — but the strongest works are pretty engrossing. The chaotic, prickly compositions created last year seem to embody our seething pathologies as much as depict them, and a squadron of scrap-metal airplanes, hanging from the gallery's ceiling, are an appealing expansion of the artist's ragtag aesthetic.
