The paintings of Chicago-based artist Jim Lutes feel at once concrete and obscured, like a distant memory where the missing details aren't as important as the feeling they evoke. Having gradually moved beyond the simple yet precise classical representation of his early work, Lutes has arrived at a thrillingly nebulous crossroads of abstraction and figuration. See Zaagmolenstraat, a 2006 tempera and oil on canvas featured in the exhibit, and you'll understand why critics reference Picasso and Guston when interpreting Lutes' trademark figurative abstraction.
