Artists from Matisse to Rothko have topped off their careers by designing chapels that serve as places of spiritual contemplation and homes for their works. In building a temple-like space within the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago-based artist Theaster Gates takes a different tack; Gates explores various modes of devotion and expression by merging traditions of Japanese Buddhism and the African-American church, while proposing communal discussion as a companion to individual reflection. Gates leads "temple exercises" at the museum each Tuesday in January, including musical performances and large-scale happenings. The exhibition also spreads out into the city via additional events at other sites — a dance club, an alternative art center, and a shoe-shine shop — which add secular urban rituals into the mix.
