Despite his apparent disdain for American suburbs, British director Sam Mendes (American Beauty, 1999) has revisited them — in mid-'50s Connecticut, no less. Adapted from Richard Yates' 1961 novel of the same name, Revolutionary Road tells the story of a handsome couple (Leo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet) who are afflicted with the terrible tragedy of believing themselves less ordinary than they are. The film's gorgeous cinematography works against itself — one needs only so many shots of armies of grey suits streaming against cityscapes — but DiCaprio's man-child tantrums (he's never been the king of subtle) contrast brilliantly with Winslet's terrific chill. However, in a turn as a Cassandra of a mentally ill neighbor, Michael Shannon steals the show.
