In hopes of tapping the under-applauded artistic pulse of America's sizable center, Heartland's three curators — hailing from Chicago and the Netherlands — embarked on a set of meandering road trips. Last spring, the Van Abbemuseum debuted a broad Heartland survey; the Smart Museum's version is a focused look at how artists in places like Detroit and Kansas City are responding to the world around them. Look for Cody Critcheloe's video BOY, which he calls "a gay-punk Forrest Gump," and Chicagoan Deb Sokolow's epilogue to the show. But is it still valid to think of art in regional terms in a mobile, globalized era? At the opening, three exhibiting artists (Kerry James Marshall, Sarah Kanouse, Marjetica Potrč) discuss.

Smart Museum of Art says…

Throughout the vast interior of the United States, contemporary artists are responding to the world around them and reshaping it in unexpected ways. Organized by the Smart Museum and the Van Abbemuseum, this exhibition includes photography, drawings, and video as well as site-specific installations and performances by a diverse assembly of artists who are redefining the cultural terrain of the American Heartland.

The exhibition premieres new commissions and presents recent works by Carnal Torpor, Compass Group, Cody Critcheloe, Jeremiah Day, Detroit Tree of Heaven Woodshop, Design 99, Scott Hocking, Kerry James Marshall, Greely Myatt, Marjetica Potrč, Julika Rudelius, Artur Silva, Deb Sokolow, and Whoop Dee Doo.
